Figure 5.6. U.S. Senate Votes on Defense Spending Bills, by Party and Religious Affiliation: Mainline Protestants

Catholic Republican senators were more likely than the Republican Party as a whole to give maximum support to increases in defense spending. However, on three votes during the 1970s, they gave no support to pending legislation.7 By the 1980s, Catholic Republican senators began to vote more with the party, and from the period after 2000, when polarization peaked, they mirrored the party overall. Like Catholic House Republicans, Catholic Senate Republicans were more likely than Senate Democrats to support defense spending. Among Catholic Republican senators, over half of the votes between 1969 and 2008 were between 90 percent and 100 percent in support of increased military spending. What was equally impressive was that the proportion of support did not decline but increased as the number of Catholic Republican senators grew between the 91st and 110th sessions. This was in sharp contrast to Catholic Democrats, who regularly voted against defense spending when compared with any other group. Nearly half of the total defense spending votes (twenty-four) by Catholic Democrats had a support level of 10 percent or less.
